Channeled Scablands Geology

Channeled scablands, geology, whatever you call it, it is more interesting than it sounds!

This Washington tour experience takes you through two very different climates. A temperate climate on the West side of the Cascade Mountains unfolds in the mountains to a semi-arid climate on the East side. Where on the West side of the Cascades get an average of 120 days of sun a year, the East gets 300!

Cheryl’s Northwest Tours begins the excursion in the Seattle area and crosses the Cascade Mountains. You’ll see massive forests and valleys, fruit orchards, and even desert. Continue through wheat fields, the channeled scablands, and finally, arrive at Dry Falls, a massive dry waterfall, 3 times wider and taller than Niagara Falls. You’ll learn why the Falls are now dry and where the water now goes.

From there, you’ll follow into a coulee and see lakes and various rock formations. It’s really amazing. Oh, sage brush, too. You’ll get a stop to see the Mighty Columbia from high above the river, and a stop to see some petrified trees from an ancient petrified forest, from the former swamps of the Columbia basin, where the coulees now are. They ended up where the are from the floods at the end of the ice age. There are so many engaging sights on this tour!

This is a delightful experience for young and old, and all ages in between. Not an educational tour, Cheryl’s Northwest Tours shares just enough to make it fun, with lots of stops for photos and the curious things, like sagebrush, an eagle, or a deer.
